Meadows Interactive - San Luis Obispo Web Design San Luis Obispo Web Design, Online Marketing, SEO and Email Marketing in SLO County Sun, 26 Oct 2014 21:15:20 +0000 en-US hourly 1 WordPress 4.0 Features Thu, 04 Sep 2014 13:50:18 +0000 WordPress 4.0 Features Expected to Include Content Editing Update, Improved Workflow for Plugin Installation, Improved Language Support

WordPress 4.0, named for jazz musician and “King of Swing” Benny Goodman (you heard it hear first!), is expected to be released later today, which means it’ll be time to update your WordPress site soon enough. Before doing so, be sure to back up your DB and content files and have an administrator familiar with WP “flip the switch” the right way.

We typically give it a couple days of bug reporting and hot fixes before we update our own live sites, but will update all dev servers and sites in the works to ensure our code works seamlessly with the latest and greatest version of WordPress.

In the meantime, here are some features and highlights to expect in the latest version of WordPress when it becomes available to the public.

You will be able to download the standalone version of WordPress 4.0 via the WP download page, or update from the header of your dashboard when the time comes.

For more detailed information on bug fixes in this release, you can always view closed tickets for this particular release.

Some of our favorite updates in 4.0 include:

Updates to how the media and embedded content are managed. Media can be a pain to update on your site in previous versions, but now you can explore previous uploads and media in a pretty nifty new, “endless” grid.

There have been a number of updates to the content editing experience, for example, the visual editor now resizes to fit the screen of your device (if on a tablet or phone for example), and just includes better handling of small screens in the media library

Separate bulk selection mode for the media library grid view

Visual improvements to plugin details, as a new grid view helps improve the workflow when finding and installing new plugins

There have also been a few improvements made to the installation language selector, as admins can now install WP in their language and have streamlined language management functions from the dashboard. This is big for sites being managed by folks in multiple countries, but won’t affect small local business sites or blogs much.

Finding Time to Blog: Blogging Via Mobile Sun, 16 Feb 2014 23:04:03 +0000 Let’s face it, busy business owners, executives and managers don’t have time to sit down and craft quality blog posts for their website.

Yet, in the eyes of Google, blogging and generating quality content is as important as ever for your online presence.

So what’s a business to do, when business development, operations and sales clearly take precedence over content marketing and communicating via the company blog?

Well, there’s always your mobile device.

Did you know blogging from a mobile device such as an iPhone or iPad has become a useful way to streamline your content marketing activities, and publish everything from blogs and photos, videos and podcasts to your website?

It’s an approach few businesses have mastered, but they certainly like the idea of mobile blogging if my guest article on Social Media Examiner is any indicator. In less than a week, the post was shared more than than 1,650 times on Twitter, 613 times on Facebook, 349 times on LinkedIn and 290 times on Google+.

Read the article to learn more about mobile blogging and if it makes sense for your business.

Your Business is Better than PhotoShop Sun, 13 Oct 2013 07:40:08 +0000 At Meadows Interactive, we believe in photography.

Good photography.

That’s why we have our own photos of the Central Coast plastered all over our site, because where we’re from plays a critical role in our business.

Our company was founded by a Central Coast native, and is powered by a team of local developers and designers from right here in San Luis Obispo County (not outsourced overseas).

And we feel it’s paramount that our website (and our client sites) reflects where we’re from, and the community we serve.

The same should be said for your local business, which is why we’re adamant about getting original, local, branded photos and imagery for all of our client websites.

We don’t settle for stock images, or take the easy way out by using PhotoShop to completely alter our banner images in hopes of fitting in with the latest marketing trend … which is what we’ve been seeing from small and even billion-dollar companies of late (see: GoDaddy):

The above screenshot was from GoDaddy’s website a couple days ago.

The following screenshot was taken today, with the same headshot of spokeswoman and racing star Danica Patrick, flaunting a pink jersey PhotoShopped over her old green fire suit.

This is a technique GoDaddy has used countless times on its homepage, which obviously converts very well considering they’ve kept the messaging the same for much of the year:

While we applaud and are passionate ourselves about cause marketing at Meadows Interactive, we also question the execution and why a billion-dollar company like GoDaddy couldn’t bother changing its messaging or even the original creative, other than cutting a pasting on new pink suit on Danica Patrick in PhotoShop.

Then again, that’s why we’re still a hometown marketing and web design agency on the Central Coast, and GoDaddy is a billion-dollar juggernaut in the desert … and we plan to keep it that way.

Gary Vaynerchuk Interview: Social Media Engagement with Mr. Crush It! Mon, 09 Sep 2013 10:37:02 +0000 There are a ton of social media “experts” online, but few truly Crush It! like @garyvee when it comes to engaging with prospective customers online.

So when I had the opportunity to sit down with best-selling author and social media rockstar Gary Vaynerchuk for a piece with Marketing Profs, I jumped at the opportunity.

Vaynerchuk, for the two of you who haven’t heard, is author of the start-up business bible Crush It!, and founder of, teaching everyone from Ellen DeGeneres to Conan O’Brien not only how to taste wine, but how to turn your passion into gold online.

Today, Vaynerchuk has millions of followers on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, but you’ll still see Mr. Crush It! “unscale the unscalable” as he likes to say, responding to fan tweets and everyday emails asking him where the hottest wines are this year.

He even hands out free advice about online marketing and social media engagement, as he did during our conversation, encouraging wineries and other business owners to engage with their customer base where they hang out online, or risk dying off completely.

“Communication is the single most important thing,” Vaynerchuk stressed at the beginning of the interview. “Blogging was the big thing a few years back. Microblogging is now the big thing, and it’s changed the dynamics a little bit. I love blogging, I come from blogging as a video blogger. But it all comes back to communication. Today, you have to be communicating on an everyday basis because communication is as important as ever.”

WordPress 3.5 hits 20 Million Download Mark Mon, 27 May 2013 04:48:28 +0000 WordPress 3.5 has been downloaded more than 20 million times.

The latest version of WordPress just hit the 20 million download milestone this afternoon, according to the download counter.

It marks the third consecutive major release of WordPress that’s topped 20 million downloads as 3.2 and 3.3 also surpassed the 20 million mark — keeping WordPress at the top of the list in terms of the most downloaded content management system on the web.

WordPress 3.4 was actually downloaded more than 28 million times before 3.5 came along, so it’ll be interesting to see if the latest version tops that, although there’s already a beta of 3.6 released.  WordPress 3.6 Beta 3 was released on May 11.

That’s a big month for WordPress, despite some negative publicity of late coming from botnet attacks hitting sites with poorly selected passwords for WordPress users and other content management systems where admin passwords aren’t secure.

Over the past month, WordPress saw more than 100,000 downloads a day and more than 3 million downloads.

WordPress release dates and posts like this serve as a good reminder to mix up your passwords and avoid using easy to guess usernames such as “admin.” In fact, by default your username is the same name WordPress pulls as your byline/author name, so to keep your username secure be sure to use a WordPress “nickname” that’s different from your actual WordPress username to make your user account that much trickier to hack.

To make sure your passwords is secure, be sure to use passwords that are:

  • Long – make sure they’re at least eight or more characters.
  • Complex – Include letters (capital and lower case), punctuation, symbols and numbers.
  • Variation – Keep your passwords effective by changing them every 90 days or so.
  • Variety – Don’t use the same password for everything.

Keep an eye out for the next release of WordPress on the blog, and be sure to back up your WordPress installation before upgrading.
